Sturbridge Fair

Sturbridge Fair
Generally agreed to have been the greatest of all the fairs in England, Sturbridge was founded by charter c.1211 and continued into the 19th century. The last day of the fair was devoted to a horse fair, at which an interesting initiation ceremony took place, at the Robin Hood Inn. A detailed account appears in Hone's Year Book (1832), written by someone who underwent the ceremony about 1762.
